About LIUNA Local 1329

After the Iron Mountain Iron Mine in Vulcan, Michigan, shut down in 1945, a group of out-of-work miners left their occupation to work construction jobs in the area. Those roughly 50 men soon joined the International Hod Carriers, Building and Common Laborers’ Union and were granted a charter by the union for a “construction and general labor” local on August 1, 1946, as Local No. 1329 in Iron Mountain. More than 65 years later, the local has grown to over 800 members, handling industrial building, commercial building, heavy highway, asbestos and pipeline work. LIUNA Local 1329 jurisdiction covers Michigan's Upper Peninsula, as well as Florence and Marinette Counties in Wisconsin.
